Last night i was sitting there watching a show on tv,when i felt this PAIN start in my calf,OMG i had the worst charliehorse in my leg i've ever had in my life,it went clear down into my toes,i had to almost bite my tongue off to keep from screaming.Everyone was in bed except for myself and my ggd,i yelled for her and when she came i couldn't even speak for a second,i finally got out,"Go get your mom",she did ,then i had her mom go get my heating pad as i know that is the only thing that works for me.She got it for me and got it plugged in,seemed like it took forever to heat,(it really didn't) they both didn't know what to do,as they had never seen me in that much pain or any pain before. It finally started easing up,but i couldn't even get out of the chair for over 1/2 an hour and my leg is still sore today.

I don't know where that came from,i haven't had one of those in a very long time, you could see all the knots in my leg,and it wasn't pretty. It's still sore today.

I wouldn't wish those on my worst enemy.

Laurie,me too,at least i feel them start, but this is the first time that it really progressed so far and in just a matter of a few seconds.Usually if i feel them coming on.i'll change positions and take 3 of those little leg cramp pills i keep on hand for that.I used to get them often in my pregnancy days, but LORD knows i'm far from ever being pregnant again in this life time.

Gabby, what kind of pickle juice, sweet or dill??I've heard of that before, but have never tried it.

Kathi, I get cramps in my legs very often. What helps is to (somehow ) get up and walk on something cold. Not heat, not for me.

I take Calcium Magnesium tablets every night. The Magnesium helps relax muscles.

Another who gets cramps. Sometimes often. Sometimes in my calves but more often in my feet and toes. I can actually see my toes drawing. When DH hears me yell (yes I have yelled and even cried at times) he will tell me to stand up. Uhm if I could stand up I would have already done that. Any movement usually makes it worse. I have been in bed and all is fine until I start to move my leg for some reason. If I am able to move I will kneed the knots in my calf (painful but helps) until it eases up. Sometimes DH has to do it for me. I use Theraworx and take those leg cramp pills Kathi suggested. I’d call this an age thing but can recall waking from a sound sleep (more than once) screaming with pain when I was late 20s - early 30s. Thankfully DH wasn’t deployed and could rub/kneed until I got some relief.
My aunt gets cramps terribly and often. Poor thing lives alone and nobody to help her rub her legs. She uses Theraworx and drinks pickle juice. She drinks pickle juice too. Somebody told her about these little bottles of pickle juice and she bought some. Not sure where she bought it though. Maybe Walmart.

Kathi I am glad your ggd was there to get gd to help you. I know those things can be very painful.

Thanks ladies, over the year i have tried walking on a cold tile floor, did nothing for me,heat for me seems to be the only relief that worksfor me and those leg cramp pills i take.I think last nights were the worst i ever remember and seemed it went on forever.I wonder why they have re appeared lately, can't think of anything i do differently.I always drink lots of water and other drinks.I did have my gd pick me up some propel today with electrolytes when she went to the store.

Francis,i'll pick up some magnesium/calcium when i go out on tuesday just to have on hand, just in case these things return again, although i hope not.

I suffer with leg cramps occasionally. I avoid a morning stretch in bed as the stretch seems to set it off. I don't know why but they most often occur during seasonal changes. I've found that wearing crew type socks to bed is helpful. I just make sure they're not too tight.

I also get cramps in the arch of my foot. Oh my, it actually brought me to tears as it just didn't want to let up one day. It's also happened a few times when I'l out shopping. And I wear good supportive sneakers and shoes.

Anyway, I don't have much to offer in suggestions (other than socks) but I hope you find something of help to avoid the pain.

Ouch is right. Hope your leg is doing better.

My one PCP said if I get Charley horses or spasms, eat bananas, need potassium, it works. I do t get them often, but when I do, it hurts.

Reading your post gave me shivers.

Five years ago I was taken by ambulance to the hospital. My body was contorting ALL over with massive painful Charlie horse cramps. Was screaming with pain. I realized it was bad when the doctor in the ER leaned over my bed and asked, "If you code, do you want us to resuscitate?"

Blood tests revealed my blood sugars had plummeted and my body was shutting down. I was severely dehydrated.

They started fluids and admitted me for observation.

I've never ever experienced pain like that. Now, when I get even a small muscle twinge, I check status of my blood sugar and push water.

Charlie horse type cramps are nothing to ignore. I "felt" your pain. Hope you get to feeling better. If possible do a blood check. 🙂

A lot of cramps are caused by lack of hydration. Drink plenty throughout the day and evening. It’s definitely what causes cramps with me. I use cold compresses from the freezer to help ease mine.

I sometimes get cramps in the calf muscles at night. I feel the pain in my toes and feet, but it is muscles in the calves, not the feet that are cramping. Most often the cramps will occur the night after doing a legs workout at the gym. I have taken to foam rolling the calves after workouts to loosen the muscles and prevent cramping. On the infrequent occasions when I do still get a cramp now, rolling relieves the cramp. Walking also helps loosen the muscles.

I bought my foam roll in the sporting goods section of Walmart. It was only about $10, well worth the cost for me. No need for pickle juice, pills, dietary changes or supplements as long as I have my foam roll.

Abbie,i can't even imagine that, through your whole body!!! The leg and foot was bad enough.I do keep a check on my blood as i'm diabetic, although these days the doc says i'm pre diabetic,so that's a good thing.

I may not have drank enough waterthat day when i think back on it as i was out in the yard for the most part, weeding, deadheading etc and i only remember drinking one bottle of water, and a diet pepsi, normally i drink over a 1/2 gallon of fluids a day,but some days i get too involved and don't want to stop for breaks, and i think it was one of those days.

Lorraine, the cold has never helped me,i've tried walking on cold tiles, cold sidewalks etc, heat is the only thing that works for me once they hit.So even though i was already hot,i had to use the heating pad.

"P" these were in the calves down into my feet, toes, you could see all the knots,i couldn't even get out of the chair they were so bad.

Kathi, and everyone writing of their painful cramp issues. I feel sorry for all of you. I get leg cramps periodically now, but nothing like I had in the past. My Doctor told me several years ago to take a magnesium supplement everyday.
I take a low dose pill (250 mg) every day. I don't take any higher than that because it can cause diarrhea. I also had horrible foot cramps, especially in the middle of night. The only immediate relief I got was by standing in the bathtub with hot water about an inch deep for a minute or two. Pain gone!
That's what worked for me. I'm in my upper 70's now, and haven't had any foot cramps for a long time. Wishing all of you a cramp free, painless future.

Try spray on Magnesium, I have a friend that swears by it.
I would also recommend not sitting for long periods of time, sitting can make them worse. Do leg lift exercises if you have to sit down for a long time.

As a suffering Charlie horse getter, I am happy to see different helps.

Whenever I get a Charlie horse I noticed in my legs, I noticed that with my toes, that all will be up and one down or all down but one up. I simply grab the odd one thats different and pull up or down so all are the same. It takes the cramp out almost immediately. Seems strange but it works for me. Maybe it might be helpful to someone else too.

I sympathize with anyone who suffers from these cramps. Staying hydrated too is a good preventative too.

God Bless

Carolyn

I get leg cramps occasionally, sometimes just a little stiffness, but I have had some doozies!

Now I drink a lot of water, I live at high altitude, dry climate and I exercise a lot. I eat bananas, potassium is in my daily supplements along with magnesium. I still get them!

So when it happens I have to stand up and move around.

It’s frustrating because my blood work is always fine, I am not dehydrated. But, when it’s hot and I go on long hikes over 4 miles I find smart water helps. It helps with any cramping and swelling for me. I also drink smart water when I fly.

I have a problem with legs, thighs, and ankles withe cramping- take Magnesium routinely, and try to stay hyrated. The cramping is usually when I don't drink enough water. But I have found that yellow mustard works for me as it has turmeric in it--- so I hobble to the fridge and down a teaspoon of it and usually get relief quickly. I have heard of the pickle juice, but don't usually have pickles, but always have yellow mustard.

I am going to try to remember to try mustard when I get cramps. We always have a large bottle in the fridge. Love mustard. When adding it to deviled eggs I always eat a couple tablespoons. DH laughs and says he can’t believe I can eat mustard that way. Good to hear it helps with leg cramps.

Kathi I Googled abd found this

“Tomato juice is a highly concentrated source of potassium, typically providing between 500 mg and 600 mg per 1-cup (8-ounce) serving. This high content makes it an excellent dietary source for increasing potassium intake, often exceeding the amount found in a banana, though it can be high in sodium”
