Got a new Medicare card today with a letter telling me when to start using it and when to destroy the one I have now. Letter stated this was to prevent fraud. I felt a little uneasy and called Medicare. Got a very nice guy who said I “have been” a victim of fraud. He said his system didn’t give him any other information. I don’t know when or where my info leaked from but I am guessing it was likely our hospital system or even an orthopedic group that both DH and I use. Both have been hacked fairly recently. With hearing so much about this type thing happening all around I felt like it was just a matter of time for DH and/or I. 😞

My DH got one of those letters last month. (I didn't.)

And a few days later, he got a card with a new Medicare number. They told him when to start using it.

Weirdly, his cardiologist already had the new number in their system, but he had to show his card and they made a copy of it.

I'm just glad they caught it.

Lynn, did you call the Medicare number or the number in the letter? You’re right; the whole thing seems very fishy, but someone who actually works for Medicare should have had access to all the information needed to help you.

I keep the Medicare number handy. The first thing I did was to compare the number I had with the number on the letter. Same number. I don’t know why the guy couldn’t give me info. I can only say I know I called the right number. I can’t swear I have been a victim of fraud but I do know that is what the guy told me. I’d be thrilled to learn I got the card for another reason.

Interesting.......The first letter had his old Medicare number on it and warned us that a new card was coming in a few days.

The letter with the card do not have the old number on it and told us when to start using it.

But both had the same number to call if we had questions. I think it was 1-800-MEDICARE.

The same situation happened to me a couple of months ago. The new card was with the letter from the Department of Health & Human Services, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. No Medicare numbers in the body of the letter.

I called 800-633-4227 to confirm whether or not I had been hacked. I had been hacked a couple of years ago and received a new card at that time. This second new card was not connected to fraud.

Just last week when I set up a medical appointment and told the clerk I had a new Medicare number, she jokingly said "join the club." She told me a number of patients had received new cards.

I received a letter today from Express scripts stating they had had a security incident involving personal information. This was back in march 2025 and they are just now getting around to letting us know??

They are offering me free identity monitoring service for 24 months thru Krollmonitoring.I think this is legit as all the addresses and phone numbers on this letter are the same ones i'vebeen using for years.

Have any of you gotten this letter??

OK, am I understanding this correctly? A new Medicare card was sent to you, with the same numbers? Or were there no numbers on the card, or new numbers?

So is the new card legit or a scam?

Kathi we haven’t received a letter from Express Scripts unless one came and DH didn’t tell me. Doubt he’d do that. Anything medical he automatically hands to me.

Now that others have received these letters and haven’t been told they were a victim of fraud I am hopeful that the guy I talked to was mistaken. 🤞

I am confused. Is this or is this not fraud? When you called Medicare directly they said it was fraud for you? Did they tell you not to use the new card or what did they tell you to do? Mary

Mary TBO I am confused too.
After receiving the letter I called the Medicare number that I have which is the same number on the letter. Letter said it was to prevent fraud. I told the guy I spoke with that the letter made me uneasy and I wanted to know why I was being sent a new card/new number. He seemed to be searching and said I was a victim of fraud. I wanted to know when and where this happened. He said he was only able to see that I had been a victim of fraud. The letter tells me what date to start using the card and the date I am to shred my now card. I keep thinking about this and if I am truly a victim why wouldn’t I start using the new card/number now? 🤷‍♀️

Did the envelope the letter came in have a return address? Also, look at the area where the postage was put and see if it says, ‘bulk rate’. Or did the postage actually have a regular stamp on it?

This is scary to think about. So you were scammed and didn't know it? How long was it going on? What info was compromised? I hope I never get a letter like that since I'm too skeptical to believe it.

My husband and I are def at the age for getting Medicare. We never received any new cards or even a letter. Once in a while one of my doctors wants to see the card. I don't carry it with me at all times for my reg card who I have health insurance through is combine. But one of my yearly drs wants to see the original card from Medicare once a year. he saw it in Jan and didn't mention about any different numbers than before.
I seldom listen to news. And I am one that will not be googled about anything going around about different subjects that ones hear on the news or read. . Truthfully I don't even know how much each month is taken out for the cost of Medicare . Where I retired from , they reimbursed us from what is taken from our SS for the cost . So we are not actually losing any money each month. Also our health insurance is based how many sicks days you saved over the years of working there. Since my husband and I both retired from the same place we did not get the family plan. We each pay for our own. So much cheaper by a few 100,

I"M almost positive mine is the real thing, and i say this because it has all the same info that express scripts has.I know their phone # by heart and that's the first thing i checked. It all looks very legit,so i'll contact that place they listed to protect our credit for the next 2 years.

Dh did not get the letter yet,but i'm sure he will,we almost never get info from them at the same time.

If your legit local news stations reported it then it's true. I follow our local stations on Facebook and that must have been where I saw it last year. Since I am not Medicare age yet paid it no mind. When you google it can also come up on your local news stations, it did for me so I know the breach was legit. I think if you weren't involved in the breach then they wouldn't send a letter and a card with new numbers. Just messaged a cousin and he and his wife received new cards and numbers a while ago because of this. Mary

My Dads work paid my Moms Medicare premiums because she was a widow. I think she got a big check back every year. My late husbands work bought all his sick days back when he retired plus gave him other monies to help with health care for a long time. Was so lucky he had this kind of job. Mary

I agree it is true. But for myself and husband we never received any notice, so we must be ok. I don't know about any friends or family. If they got any messages. We don't get into subjects like that when we get together. Just catching up and sharing laughs is what matters to me.
Like right now they are keeping an eye on the news of the virus that struck that cruise ship. They know we leave in less than 2 months for our 14 days total of cruising off from west coast of the US . they know I don't watch much tv.

BTW, earlier this year we got a letter from one of the doctor's that only my DH goes to saying that there was a breach in their computer system.

They gave us a year of free credit monitoring. (Big whoop-dee-do.)

So I suspect it was from that doctor's office that the scrumbum got the info to use my DH's Medicare card fraudulently.
