It is very unusual to get an earthquake in New York and in this area. But at 8:30 pm one was confirmed 2.3 magnitude. People are posting they felt some rumble that the town they live in is about 7 miles from us.

Rochester Channels. And some of the news cast that I follow on FB . Honeyeo is about an hour from Rochester. Don't know what to tell you as to why you can't find the info.
I do not listen to 11 pm news, but I know it will be on them.

I also can't find anything on the computer, guess it'll be picked up later online after your 11:00 news finishes. These days I expect almost instantaneous news online but I've discovered that isn't the case. Thankfully, 2.3 isn't very strong so it's likely there's no damage. Always a good thing.Back in 2011, we felt the 5.8 earthquake that originated in VA. That really rumbled and my first thought was that the dining room floor was collapsing to the basement. We fled to the living room and then I realized it was an earthquake. LOL. Last year, I felt another one Aug 5 of 2.7 magnitude. That one just felt like mild rumbling for a few seconds. It didn't last as long as the 2011 one.

We have felt a few here in NY. One time early in the morning we thought the furnace exploded. I never know earthquakes made noise like that. But later I noticed that everything on the dresser top had shifted. That was near Cooperstown. Another time my daughter and I were sitting in the family room when we both felt mild shaking. We both just looked at each other recognizing what it was. This was in Delaware County.

Forgot to add that I am glad there were no injuries or damage reported. I did only read one article though.

I did a search, or an inquiry in this case, about earthquakes along the eastern seaboard, and here's what I found...Yes, there are thousands of ancient, largely dormant fault lines along the eastern seaboard and beneath the Atlantic continental shelf. While not as active as the West Coast, the East Coast has pre-existing, weak "sleeping" faults—some 500 million years old—that can be reactivated by stress, causing rare but felt earthquakes.
Key Details About East Coast Faults:
"Sleeping" Faults: Unlike California’s plate boundary faults, Eastern faults are located in the middle of the tectonic plate and are very old.
Reactivation: Stress from the slowing retreat of Ice Age glaciers is believed to be reactivating these ancient faults.
Major Fault Zones:
Ramapo Fault Zone: A major 185-mile-long system in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.
Brevard Fault Zone: A large, partially buried fault system linked to Appalachian mountain building.
Why They Matter: Because eastern bedrock is colder and harder, earthquakes can travel much farther than western quakes, affecting much larger areas.
Notable Activity: A 4.8-magnitude earthquake occurred in April 2024, linked to these ancient systems, and a 5.8-magnitude quake struck Virginia in 2011.
Hope that helps.

Our local country radio station reported it over night. Sometimes if they happen in Canada we feel them in Buffalo. Mary

I must have experienced the same quake as Wendy/Bigbird as I am also in the Cooperstown area as she was. It was a few years ago, rattled dishes, shook the floor & scared the cats.Lois
