Subject:What’s the best way to store cross stitch fabrics?
Body:
I don’t have much storage because we have a small house. Right now I’m keeping my fabric stash in a bedroom closet, in a large Rubbermaid Tub, organized by fabric count and colors in plastic zip-lock bags that I leave the zip-lock bags NOT zipped close. I’m going into my fabric stash next week and wondering if there is just a better way I’m not thinking of to prevent mold, mildew or fabric degeneration. Any suggestions?

I hang my larger pieces on a skirt hanger and put them in one of those hanging clothes bags.

Smaller ones I use those plastic storage boxes. I've been sorting/using/getting rid of so I'm down to one plastic box.

I have under the bed boxes (with wheels) storing my linen. My very own "linen press".

I iron them first to get the creases out. Then I place the linens on top of each other and lay half of the stack in the box. (The other half is hanging outside the box.) Place a pool noodle wrapped with muslin or acid free tissue paper at the center of the linen and then flip the stack over the noodle. That prevents any creases. Does that sound clear as mud?!! 🤣 I have a 28ct & 36ct box, one for 36ct and another for 40ct & 46 ct.

It probably depends on how much fabric you keep on hand.

Mine is currently on skirt hangers in a closet. I only have one or two fat quarters of each count (28, 32, 36), plus a few smaller pieces that I bought just to try something different (brighter colors, 40 count ).

I’m reorganizing the basement, and was recently able to consolidate the gift wrap. This freed-up a Rubbermaid bin that was made to hold rolls of giftwrap, with two sliding sections to hold bows, tags, etc. I’m going to try using the bottom part for the fat quarters and the top for smaller pieces & finishing supplies.

I have mom’s old dresser, 5 drawers, lines and fabrics are in open bags in each drawer by count. Miscellaneous fabrics I’ve gotten at thrift stores are in drawers in craft room, plus yards and yards of Aida. I dye my own fabrics and keep separated by count.

Large pieces hung on regular hangers [in a closet] with new clothes pins holding the fabric on the hanger. Then covered with 100% white cotton pillowcases to let it breathe and to keep the dust off.

Smaller pieces stacked in dresser drawers with acid free paper to keep it off the wood which can damage fabric.

I also wrap heavily colored fabric in acid free paper because one time a piece of red fabric colored the piece below it.

I iron all fabric before storing so that the fold lines don't become permanent.

Did want to add that I place acid-free archival tissue paper at the bottom and up the sides of my under-bed-boxes to avoid the linen touching the plastic

Also, if you don't have a big collection of fabric then one box would do you fine, just organize them by count..
