The alphabets have been fastidiously reproduced from samplers dating from 1530, to 1868. Over 80 alphabets are charted, as well as two complete alphabet samplers, one of them dating from 1725.

This is a very fine example of an early northern Dutch sampler called a letterndoek, or alphabet sampler. The illuminated letters are typical of northern Holland needleworks. Symbolic spot motifs include dogs, a stag, trees of life, and paired birds.

This sampler has no name on it so I lovlingly, refer to it as the Black Cat sampler. I believe the original was crafted in England. There are two sets of initials on the sampler but I have not been able to determine if they are that of the stitchers.

The verse on this sampler is from "O Christmas Tree" a German Christmas song written in 1824 by Ernst Anschutz. This song was based off a 16th century Silesian Folksong by Melchior Franck called Ach Tannenbaum. Third in the series of samplers with lots of fun stitches.
