You can push your needle with the indented guard and then grasp your needle from the other side by aligning the needle in the needle grabber and pushing down on the plunger to grip it and then pulling your needle and thread through the fabric. I had a needle "stuck" and used the puller and it pulled it through the fabric effortlessly. My new favorite gadget. Highly recommend. I am older and my grip strength has diminished, this is really helpful and not complicated to use.
