Recently, I was reading Katherine Lee Bates' poem "America the Beautiful" and was struck by the third stanza, which speaks of heroes and nobleness. That lead me to think about all of the heroes in my own life (both known and unknown), all the people who gave up their time, talents, and treasure to see me flourish. We may, at times, lose sight of it, but we really are a nation of the Noble & True-a people who see nobility in giving of ourselves to lift up those around us. This third pattern in our American flag series was created as a reminder of this truth against the cynicism of our current moment. We are a better people than we know, and we can be better still.
