It's fascinating watching squirrels in the fall as the scramble to collect nuts for the winter. When a friend challenged me to create something with squirrels, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to have some fun. I imagine the squirrels dropping their prize collectibles and exclaiming AWW NUTS!
Pattern is stitched on 40 count Straw by Weeks Dye Works with DMC and Weeks Dye Works floss. Stitch Count 71 x 71 and the finished size is 3.55" x 3.55".
Inspiration for this design came from a vintage velvet tomato pincushion. Somehow that became two squirrels stitching under an acorn "bobbin" tree, an acorn basket and an acorn drum with the text "gather and stitch."

Stitched on 32 ct Tin Roof by Weeks Dye Works linen stitched with DMC floss, two strands over two linen threads. Each animal has a stitch count of 67 x 66 with a finished size of 4.19" x 4.13".
I loved this classic fall design so much that I asked my model stitcher to stitch it in two different colors! The front cover photo (above) is the model in rust using Belle Soie Silk Floss, while the back cover model (below) is a deep dark chocolate color using Threadworx.
