National Female Model School Sampler - Kildare Place, Dublin circa 1820

This pattern has 1 specialty stitch - the Satin Stitch. And the small alphabet at the top and the small letters at the bottom are stitched over 1 thread of linen. Pattern is stitched on 46 ct. linen with 100/3 Au Ver a Soie silk floss. The stitch count is 96 x 147 and the finished size is 4.17" x 6.39".

On the back of this framed antique, was found a very aged handwritten note: "This Sampler was worked by Mary Coleby of Kelvedon, Essex when Eleven years of age at Ackworth School Yorkshire. Model stitched one over two on 36 Ct. Straw using Needlepoint Inc Silk. Stitch Count: 270W x 272H. Design Size: 15" x 15.11".

Mary Garrett stitched her fine sampler at Claverton school in 1854 at age fifteen. It is a remarkable piece of needlework, incorporating five different alphabets all stitched meticulously over two on 72 count linen. More history is included on the chart.
