This English sampler was made in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, featuring the Sheffield General Infirmary, a verse, a fashionably dressed man and woman, and a collection of animals in the lawn in front (sheep, fox, squirrels, rabbit, dog), all surrounded by a four sided berry border.

The Sheffield General Infirmary opened in 1792, and was renamed "Royal Infirmary" in 1897. It was closed in the 1980's. It was quite the architectural marvel of its time and a source of local pride, enough for young Elizabeth Gray to stitch it on her sampler. The original block depicted on the sampler still stands, renamed Heritage House, and is a Grade II listed building.

Stitches used in the sampler are cross and four sided. On 35 count linen it will most closely approximate the size of the original, at 19" x 20". The sampler is recommended for any skill level. Stitch count is 334 x 330.
