Try as we might, we cannot find another sampler to compare with this one by Sarah Brignell. It is a sampler unto itself: truly an original piece of folk art. The tiny central cartouche with the densely stitched scene floats like a little world unto itself in the midst of the exuberant garden of flowers vining around all four sides. This is what we try to seek out in our samplers for reproduction: the unique, the genius that shines through, the personal expression that goes beyond the stock art form, that retains its brilliance over the centuries. Samplers are vastly more than mere alphabetical exercises in monotony. Here is an example of sampler art at its finest.

Stitched on 40 count linen, which was used to stitch the cover model, the finished sampler will have finished size of approximately 15.83" x 23.11". Stitch count is 290 x 420. It is recommended for intermediate level needleworkers.

This is a beautiful project presented in 16 pages of extremely legible, high level charting. The flosses are listed only as cotton and silk. The numbering systems are for DMC and Soie d Alger (as indicated by 123Stitch). The suggested fabric counts are for 35 or 40-count linen. As best I can tell, all of the sampler is stitched over 2 threads except for the verse which is stitched over 1 thread as petit point. My most recent experience in working petit point over one thread on 35 count linen required me to use one strand of silk thread. I found cotton to just be too thick. The picture of the sampler shows an inner and outer border, but neither appear in the graphs. The project is recommended for intermediate level needleworker, which I would say is fairly accurate. But since it is 99% cross stitch, I think any cross stitcher could take on this project with success.

I love samplers more than any other patterns. About 4 years ago, half of my stash was stolen, and my beloved samplers were stolen amongst stitched pieces. I've been slowly trying to find samplers I had, most out of print now, but I was so happy when I saw this one which I had and was grateful to find. So, I bought it. If you love samplers as much as I do, this sampler will not disappoint. Love this sampler. Thank you.
