Straw linen with Gloriana Silks (Jacaranda, Blue Spruce, Blue Spruce Light, Antique Gold Dark, Sand Castles, Toadstool, Jersey Shore) and Soie d'Alger (2632) - or DMC floss (3031, 502, 503, 453, 841, 830, 822, 3859). Stitch Count is 240W x 250H. Finished size is 7.5" x 9".
In adapting this sampler to be stitched over one and two threads of linen - instead of 1, 2, 3, and 4 as stitched by Mary - we endeavored to remain true to her composition while creating a more "stitchable" sampler. While the antique is framed, we decided to hemstitch our sampler. We are fortunate that Mary included her age, middle initial and the date she stitched her sampler.
The name and style of this sampler led us to investigate whether it was created in Spain or Mexico. Mexican sampler scholar Mayela Flores Enriquez, PhD, confirmed that although the name is Hispanic, the style of flower baskets and larger girl are not consistent with Mexican dechados (samplers). Sometime during the height of Berlin Wood Work, a child saw a deer resting in the woods and decided to recreate its regal presence, along with some delightful motifs frequently seen on samplers of the era. Found in the UK and recreated for your stitching pleasure.
Although we have been unable to identify our sampler maker, she definitely knew her geography. Harriet accurately listed the states and territories of the date she stitched in her sampler. Even though the antique sampler is in a tattered state, we are especially happy to preserve Harriet's legacy by recreating her sampler to be enjoyed today.
We are so excited to recreate a well-used and tattered watch pocket that no doubt held a lady's watch from bygone days. A ribbon tab on the back of the antique likely was intended to be used to hang the stitched pocket from a display book. We did examine the inside of the antique, revealing some fading of the blue-green floss. Perhaps the maker depicted her home or school as well as beloved pets.
