In adapting this sampler to be stitched over one and two threads of linen - instead of 1, 2, 3, and 4 as stitched by Mary - we endeavored to remain true to her composition while creating a more "stitchable" sampler. While the antique is framed, we decided to hemstitch our sampler. We are fortunate that Mary included her age, middle initial and the date she stitched her sampler.
nspired by an 1874 antique, this adaptation sampler has been beautifully reproduced in collaboration with Cherry Hill Stitchery. Bright florals, elegant birds, and a radiant central motif create a cheerful and timeless heirloom piece.

This design was inspired by my collection of antique samplers, and several of the motifs were lovingly pulled from those treasured pieces. We are so excited to recreate a well-used and tattered watch pocket that no doubt held a lady's watch from bygone days. A ribbon tab on the back of the antique likely was intended to be used to hang the stitched pocket from a display book. We did examine the inside of the antique, revealing some fading of the blue-green floss. Perhaps the maker depicted her home or school as well as beloved pets.

The name and style of this sampler led us to investigate whether it was created in Spain or Mexico. Although we have been unable to identify our sampler maker, she definitely knew her geography. Harriet accurately listed the states and territories of the date she stitched in her sampler. Even though the antique sampler is in a tattered state, we are especially happy to preserve Harriet's legacy by recreating her sampler to be enjoyed today.
SS Harris is Sarah Sylyina Harris who stitched her sampler in the thirteenth year of her life. With no year and no place provided it is difficult to find out more about her. What we do know from the way she carried her thread and misspelled a word or two, perhaps even her middle name, is that she... Read more
