This exquisite Victorian sampler was stitched in Norfolk, England by Rosa Gromett when she was just twelve years old. Renowned for their beauty, Norfolk samplers are celebrated for rich color and intricate design-and Rosa's is a particularly fine example.
Rosa executed the sampler primarily in cross stitch worked over two threads, demonstrating remarkable skill and control for such a young stitcher. In contrast, she introduced texture and definition by stitching a distinctive sawtooth border in satin stitch around the verse. She further highlighted her name, age, and the year by surrounding them with a second sawtooth border, also worked in satin stitch.
