Designer: Scarlet Letter
Item: SCTL-141
Type: Cross Stitch Patterns
This English sampler comes from the collection of the late Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Jarrett, who established Witney Antiques. It was featured in one of their exhibition catalogs in December 1996 titled "All Creatures Great and Small."
The work is extremely fine and accomplished, considering the age of the maker. The octagonal tablet in the upper register encloses the Lord's Prayer which is surrounded by a beautiful carnation border. Two crowned angels hold a crown of life between them between the prayer and the attribution. At the bottom right and left are two delightful heraldic animals: a lion rampant on the left and a unicorn on the right, motifs that appear more commonly in seventeenth-century work. At the lower center is a bird in a tree piercing its own breast to feed its chicks, the pelican symbolic of Christ.
Stitches used in the sampler are queen, eyelet, cross, back, and counted satin, all illustrated and explained in the instructions. On 40-count linen, the finished reproduction will be almost the same size as the original sampler- 16 1/4" x 16". The project is recommended for more advanced needleworkers.
Pattern is stitched on 40 count fabric using DMC or Aver a Soie threads. Stitch count is 317 x 322. Recommended cut size is 20 x 21.
