Rosena Disery stitched her sampler in 1820 at the New York African Free School. It is one of a few samplers known to have been stitched by a Black girl and one of only two from this school. This pattern was created with permission of the New York Historical Society, which owns Rosena's sampler.
Amazingly, for a 19th century Black woman, there is a good deal known about Rosena's life. Extensive information about her and the school is included in the pattern.
The model was stitched on 32 count fabric using DMC threads. Only cross stitches are used, but there is both over 2 and over 1 stitching in this pattern. Stitch count is 219 x 177. Pattern is black and white.
Happy stitching!
